Co-Mingling Of Histories (Part II)

🌿BREATHE TRUTH🌿

“One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to have dinner with him, so Jesus went to his home and sat down to eat.

When a certain immoral woman from that city heard He was eating there, she brought a beautiful alabaster jar filled with expensive perfume.”  —Luke 7:36-37

🌿LIVE THE REAL TRUTH🌿

Our horizontal history consists of relationships we build and bridge among people around us, including believers and non-believers.

Our vertical history consists of the unique relationship we cultivate and care for between God and us.

When we live out our horizontal history to intersect with our vertical history, we live differently, love deeply, and leave dedicatedly a faith legacy for those who come after, including our children.

Live.  Love.  Leave.  Make a difference in your horizontal history as God makes a difference in your  vertical history with Him.

Vertical History

The woman of Luke 7 with the alabaster jar.  Jesus compares her vertical history with the Pharisee’s.

The minute she steps inside his home, her vertical history with God begins to reveal and unveil itself.

🍃

Live differently.

“Look at this woman kneeling here.  When I entered your home, you didn’t offer to wash the dust from my feet, but she has washed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair.” —Luke 7:44

Her position is a humble one.  She falls down to the ground as a servant would do.  She washes and wipes his feet out of what she has.  She gives to Jesus her innermost best.  Even when we think we have little to offer.  God doesn’t see it as less.

Her placement is a worshipping one.  Kneeling before Jesus, she surrenders all that she is not, for all that He is.

I tell you, her sins, and they are many, have been forgiven. —Luke 7:47

The woman has lived a life away from God.  Now, she is turning her life towards Him.  Forgiven and freed.  Her position and placement is transformed.  From darkness to deeper.  From wanderer to worshipper.  This is her new vertical history.

She lives differently.

🍃

Love deeply.

You didn’t greet me with a kiss, but from the time I first came in, she has not stopped kissing my feet. You neglected the courtesy of olive oil to anoint my head, but she has anointed my feet with rare perfume.”  —Luke 7:45-46

This woman shows her love for Jesus.  She kisses u reserved and unembarrassed.  She pours the rare perfume from her alabaster jar which costed roughly a years worth of wages (Mark 14:5).

I tell you, her sins—and they are many—have been forgiven, so she has shown me much love.  —Luke 7:47

Sacrificial love lived out in her vertical history.  She held nothing back and gave to Jesus all that she could because what she found in Him was greater.  In our vertical history, a receiving, releasing, and responding takes place.  We receive his forgiveness, are released from our old life, and are free to respond back.

She loves deeply.

🍃

Leave dedicatedly.

I tell you the truth, wherever the good news is preached throughout the world, this woman’s deed will be remembered.  —Mark 15:9

The woman with the alabaster jar leaves the Pharisee’s house physically empty-handed because of her sacrifice, but spiritually filled.  She leaves a legacy of faith in her life, her family’s life, and now us to read.  A legacy of faith living and loving Jesus Christ well.

She leaves dedicatedly.

Our vertical history is a reflection of where we are with God.  Build your vertical history.  Bless others with your very vertical history.  Become the man or woman of God that He calls you to be in your vertical history.

When we intersect our horizontal history with people and our vertical history with God, we can glorify God, give more, go further, and grow our lives deeper into the depths of the Real Truth.
