Sheep are an interesting group of animals. They bond together well. But they have vulnerabilities that put them at risk for attack and injury.
Sheep are not adept at defending themselves. On land, when faced with a predator like a wolf, they don’t fight fiercely or fight back. They huddle close to one another instead, allowing the wolf to kill them.
Sheep are not adept at saving themselves either. In a water environment, their reaction depends on movement. In moving water, they drown. In still water, they manage to stay calm enough to drink.
Sheep are not natural leaders. They are followers. If the lead sheep goes into a dangerous area, the rest will accompany. If the lead sheep walks towards and falls over a cliff, the other sheep will follow, spiraling to their death as well.

Similarily, we are like sheep.
We face predators and enemies whom we are unable to fight or be victorious. Wolves in the earthly and spiritual realm. Threatening behind the scenes and attacking us full frontal.
We encounter adverse terrains of people and places, unfamiliar and dangerous. Where we can’t conquer and find ourselves being conquered.
We follow anti-God influences that lead us to deep waters, muddy mires, and fatal cliffs where we can’t swim to shore, extricate, or find a way out.
We look for deliverance and safety. Who will come to our rescue?

Many gates pop up and appear in our lives. Each gate leads to a different place of arrival and destination. A myriad of venues where we access personal relationships, professional career, private decisions, and pending consequences. Persuasive and suggestive voices abound behind each gate, asking, beckoning, and calling us to walk through.

But the safest gate. The only one that leads to unconditional love, mercy, and hope is only found in Jesus Christ. No other garden-variety, fly by night, temporal gate here. He is The Gate, The Door, The Way to salvation. To be saved, to come and go freely in freedom, to find verdant and abundant pastures. Jesus Christ is our ultimate Gate to new life. The eternal and everlasting Gate.
