Jesus as God and man. The divinity and the humanity. A joint adventure and venture of heaven and earth.
In John 2:1-5, we are invited to peer into and visit the wedding and marriage at Cana. Mary, Jesus, and Jesus’ friends, the disciples, are in attendance. All is well until the wine supply runs out during the festivities.
What does Jesus’ mother do? She tells Jesus to fix the problem. What is Jesus’ response?
But Mom……
Jesus’ initial answer is no. But Mary overrides her son’s objections and goes forward to resolve this beverage issue. Setting aside Jesus’ relunctance, Mary takes charge and informs the servants to heed Jesus’ instructions on the shortage problem.
But Mom……even though Jesus did not plan to reveal His miracle capabilities or initiate His ministry yet. At this venue, at this location, at this place, at this time, at this moment.
But, because of the insistence and persistence of His sweet mom. Jesus, the earthly son, obeys His earthly mother.
A beautiful picture of Jesus’ humanity,
We see here a rare and intimate conversation between Jesus and Mary. Of a son who doesn’t want to comply with his mother’s request at first. Because, He has his reasons and it’s complicated. But since it is his mother who is asking, like a good, good son, Jesus complies.
Jesus, who comes to heal the sick, free the captives, and save the world. Who can command legions of angels at his call. Who was present when the world was created and who created all there is called life on earth. This same Jesus was also under the authority of his human mother.
Jesus didn’t agree with everything his mother said. But He respected her and He listened to her.
Jesus lived as fully man so that he could fully identify with us, a group of children who want our ways as well.
Jesus came. He understands our emotions, needs, discord, and stubbornness. His identification with us as man opens a door and provides a safe place for us to come and pour out our humanity and differences.
Will you come to Jesus? Will you let down your guard and surrender your humanity, all that you are, all your burdens, worries, anxieties, concerns, plans. Today. Every day. Because He understands.
Come to Jesus. Come to the Real Truth.
