Along the Riverbank

Where we put our trust and hope for our lives determine how we grow, under what conditions, and what keeps us thriving.

Blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence.

They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water.

Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought.  Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.”  —Jeremiah 17:7-8

The old adage.  Life is better understood backwards.  But not always.  No matter how much we try, sometimes we can never quite grasp a rational understanding for why some things occurred the way they did.

Perhaps God wanted to organize life that way.  Because God’s ways are not our ways and His thoughts are not our thoughts.

In our inability to understand all that happens in our lives, leaves a door for us to walk through called trust.

In Jeremiah 17:7-8, the prophet Jeremiah delineates what happens when we take up the courage to walk through the door of trust.  When we can’t see what lies ahead or how the future will look in its entirety.

  1. When we trust in God, He sets us apart for Him, to enjoy His goodness.  Indeed, “blessed” is defined as enjoying happiness, or enjoying the bliss of heaven; holy, consecrated or set apart.  True joy or bliss is found solely in our hope and confidence in Him. People and may disappoint us, but what God promises, He keeps His word.
  2. When we trust in God, we are anchored in deep roots that reach deep down and are nourished by the Living Water of God Himself.   Like planted trees that flourish because of its divine placement along God’s riverbank.
  3. When we trust in God, His eternal waters protects us from the elements of the world and provides for us so that we can produce fruit and remain leafy green, spiritually healthy.

We don’t always understand the whys and how comes of God’s ways and thoughts.  But trusting in God results in earthly and eternal benefits that give us abundant life through His joy, being rooted in Him, so we can bear much fruit for His glory.

Enjoy the journey of being planted and rooted in God.  Along the Riverbank that flows lasting waters.  Drink profusely in this Real Truth.
