🌿Breathe Truth🌿
“That same day two of Jesus’ followers were walking to the village of Emmaus, seven miles from Jerusalem… As they talked and discussed these things, Jesus Himself suddenly came and began walking with them. But God kept them from recognizing Him.” —Luke 24:13-16
They said to each other, “Didn’t our hearts burn within us as He talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?” —Luke 24:32

This story is headlined as the Walk To Emmaus. But really, it should be entitled the Walk From Emmaus. The two individuals who arrive in Emmaus are not the same ones who leave Emmaus.
The Encounter. “They stopped short, sadness written across their faces.” (Luke 24:18) Two of Jesus’ followers find themselves meeting Jesus as they travel to Emmaus. They are kept from fully understanding who He is. Three days before, He had been crucified. Filled with overwhelming sadness over His death. Still fervently passionate about sharing who Jesus was. Yet deeply disappointed because they “had hoped He was the Messiah who had come to rescue Israel.” ( Luke 34:20)
The Enlightenment. “Then Jesus took them through the writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining from all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.” —(Luke 24:27) Jesus would set the record straight. He delineated His coming, His ministry, His mission. That He had to endure the cross for a greater purpose.
The Endearment. “Nearing Emmaus and the end of their journey. Jesus acted as if He were going on, but they begged Him, ‘Stay the night with us….So He went home with them.’ ” (Luke 24:28) Jesus, the Savior of the world sat down, took the bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them. Then, their eyes were opened to truly realize who He truly was. In His last supper with His special 12 disciples, He had communion with them, broke bread and declared, “This is My body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.” (Luke 22:19)
