The highest good possible. Summum bonum is an expression derived from Latin which means “the highest good.” Roman philosopher Cicero coined this term as a counterpart to Plato’s Greek concept of the Idea of the Good.
Plato believed that the Idea or Form of the Good was an eternal, unchangeable, and flawless entity that exists outside of time and space, whereby good things were shared from.
Similarly, Cicero believed that the Summum bonum was the supreme good from which all other good was derived from. The principle of goodness from which all moral values are included.
What both men were really trying to define was God. The ultimate goodness. The highest or chief good. The perfect goodness that transcends time and space.

For a Christian then, Summum bonum, the ultimate good, isn’t only God Himself, but a surrendered life of one who loves and follows God.
Do what is good and run from evil so you may live!
When the concept of Summum bonum is considered in the context of this verse, we see Christian living as a life endeavor of running away from evil and running towards God. So that one may find life, and live it abundantly.
Do what is good as a surrendered life of one who loves and follows God…..and run from evil so you may live!

Indeed, the highest good and evil cannot coexist. One has to conquer the other. Likewise, God and evil cannot share power. One must triumph above the other. Because God and sin cannot share kingship. Only one can take the throne.

Think of it this way: Sin leads to spiritual death. Spiritual death leads to a separation from God. A separation from God allows evil to rule and a loss of goodness. We counter this adverse domino effect through a love relationship with God.
In your life, who is the Summum bonum, the ultimate good? Make God the highest good in your journey of faith, and loving and following Him a Summum bonum way of life.
Choose the Real Truth as your Summum bonum.
