How do we learn to follow Jesus?
Peter and his brother Andrew had docked their boat at the water’s edge. Washing their nets. Finishing the day. Getting their equipment ready for the next trip.
Then Jesus appears with a crowd of people. Jesus then asks Peter two very important questions.
- Can you move your boat a little bit away from the shore? “Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon, it’s owner, to push it out into the water. So He (Jesus) sat in the boat and taught the crowds from there.” —Luke 5:3
- Can you move your boat a lot further away from the shore? “When He (Jesus) had finished speaking, He said to Simon, ‘Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.”—Luke 5:4
Do you see the progression of what takes place between Jesus and Simon Peter?
Jesus asks Peter to move his boat only a short distance from shore so He can utilize Peter’s boat to teach the crowds. Peter listens and obeys.
After Peter’s obedience regarding pushing the boat a little ways. Jesus then asks Peter to go much further into the deeper waters.
Because Peter obeyed going into the shallow waters, Jesus offered him a chance to pursue deeper waters.
Beloved, is Jesus inviting you into the shallow waters of trusting Him? Then do so. Because from the shallow waters, He will show you even greater truths in the deeper waters.
Following Jesus. Requires going through the shallow and deeper waters. But oh, what you will find! Live this Real Truth today.
