We were at Hobby Lobby this week on a girls outing with my daughters and I. A shelf appeared that we hadn’t seen before. Two short rows of Bibles. Surprised, we stopped by to see. One book caught her attention. It had flowers on the binder and flower drawings inside.
“This Bible has flowers just like yours. Can I get this, Mom?”
“Of course,” I replied.
Then I perused it for myself. Hmmm……
“Honey, this is the Kings James Version of the Bible. You might want to read it over first.”
My daughter picked it up and began reading aloud a passage to me: “…….thus saith the Lord.
Kids may not pick this version because its word choices are more antiquated. So I thought.

“If you change your mind about this Bible, just place it back in its spot.”
I stood there scanning the shelf of Bibles looking for something else she might like. Nothing. So I’m waiting for her to put the Bible back on the shelf. Waiting….
I turn around, about to remind her, when my eyes fell on our shopping cart. To my surprise, the Kings James Version Bible was back in our cart. “Do you still want this?” I asked. She nodded yes.

The King James Version is a translation of the Bible for the Church of England begun in 1604. It was finally completed and published in 1611 under the sponsorship of King James the first. His mother was Mary, Queen of Scots. He became king as a one year old. He succeeded the last Tudor monarch, Queen Elizabeth I, who passed away childless. King James reigned over three regions, England, Scotland, and Ireland and died in 1625.
Basically, it’s a very old Bible.

As parents, we try to analyze our children when we don’t understand their actions. Her choice of the KJV puzzled me. The old English wording from the 1600s takes a bit getting used to. Why this?
Her first reply to me: “This Bible has flowers just like yours.”
In our home, there are Bibles downstairs in the kitchen and in the living room on top of the sofa headrest for easy access. Upstairs, there is a Bible in every room. Homeschooling 4 kiddos means trying to read a little bit when possible. So the bibles are strategically placed throughout the house. Most of the Bibles have flowers on them.
My daughter’s first reply to me: “This Bible has flowers just like yours.”
It hit home. This is why she wanted the KJV. The flowers, like mine. It didn’t matter that I didn’t have a KJV. My girl simply wanted a floral Bible like her mom.

Our children watch us. All that we do and don’t do. Everything we do in Christ matters to them.
“She has no fear of winter for her household, for everyone has warm clothes.” —Proverbs 31:21
If we stay close to God and His Word, our children will emulate similarly. They watch our actions and interests, what we pursue and love. If we love Jesus, we establish a platform for them to leap from and grasp hold of Jesus. Springing forth requires a source. In your household, let it be a foundation of pursuing God that your children can spring forth from. As they observe from you, they will learn to take ownership of their faith. They will come to their own land and know that God will provide.
No fear of winter here.

Put on the Word of God. “Clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 13:14) Wear enough layers of warm clothing of the words of God so that there’s no fear of winter.
In your household, put on the Real Truth every day.
