Giving Up What I Love

One morning, pre-Covid, as I walked out the door of our hotel in Hawaii, I ran into one of the cleaning staff ladies, Jen. She had a metal cart loaded with supplies. I had called for a few amenities.  She was coming to our room with a small toiletries bag as I was heading towards the elevator to go downstairs.  Our paths intersected.  I received the bag from her and thanked her.

“I will be right back.  Can you hold the elevator for me if it arrives?” I asked her. (Presently, was an extra long wait that hour because of checkouts). I dropped the amenities off in our room and returned to the elevator. Jen was still there.  Here’s our conversation:

Me: Do you have any kids?

Jen: “Yes, I have 6 kids.”

Me: “Wow, I have four and I thought that was a lot. You must be super-mom. What are their age range?”

Jen: “My oldest is 15 and my youngest is 2 months. But I actually have 7 kids.”

When she changed the number of kids she had, I was surprised.  What she said next was even more stunning.

Jen: “My youngest child….my 2 month-old baby son. My brother and his wife couldn’t have children and so they asked me if they could have my baby. So I gave them my son.”

No one had ever told me they had given their child away in this manner.  In fact, no one had ever told me they had given their child away period.

As I was processing this unusual decision, I was reminded of someone else who had given their child away. Except that this parent had only one Son, Jesus. God The Father, who loved the people He had created so much. God who gave His One and Only Son, that whoever believes in Him, will not perish, but have everlasting life.

If someone asked you to give up your child, someone you loved, or something irreplaceable to you. Would you do it? Not only that, but you would accept nothing in return for your sacrifice?

Friends, Jesus died on the cross for you and I and He did it without requiring anything from you. All He asks is that you believe in Him and accept Him as the One who redefines your reality. He died so that your sins would be swept away as the far winds.  God gave up what He loved so you and I can have a new life in His Son Jesus Christ.

Jesus, who was crucified on the cross, who arose from the grave three days later, and who has a new plan for your life and a new truth. Jesus came so you can live out the Real Truth.
