Character Building, Catching Souls Part 1

🌿BREATHE TRUTH🌿

At dawn Jesus was standing on the beach, but the disciples couldn’t see who he was.  He called out, ‘Fellows, have you caught any fish?’

No,’ they replied.  Then he said, ‘Throw your net on the right side of the boat, and you will get done!’  So they did, and they couldn’t haul in the net because there were so many fish.”  —John 22:4-6

🌿LIVE THE REAL TRUTH🌿

What questions have you been asking yourself recently?  How are my relationships?  How’s my career?  Why did this happen in the past?  How’s my present?  What will my future look like?  One of the most notable questions that we wonder, if I am in need or in trouble, will God come through for me?

Not only do we ponder about our life, but God cares about our outcomes too.  When Jesus inquires of the disciples, Have you caught any fish, what Jesus is really asking, Do you need any help?

Seven disciples go fishing.  They embark on a boat, but they catch nothing all night.  When dawn breaks, unknown to them, Jesus is standing on dry land.

Some of us have problems that have lasted much longer than a night.  Days, weeks, even seasons of nights transpired where our struggle remained unresolved.  Some of us have yet to catch one fish.  Some of us are still in the boat.  Some of us wonder if we will catch enough fish so we can catch the next wave back to familiar land.

Can you see over there?  On the shore as the sun is rising.  The man looking at you.  The solution isn’t found here in the boat, the waters, or the fishes.  Not experience or education, capability or caliber, luck or learning.  Not what kind of boat you possess, the conditions of the waves, or the availability of fishes.  Not because mother nature or the world gives you a break.  The answer to your problem lies in Jesus.

The disciples have been peering into the waters all through the dead of night.  Hoping for something of value to appear.

We seek the natural.  God works in the supernatural.

We seek in the dark of night.  God works in the light of His Son Jesus Christ.

We seek within our surround.  God works through the crown.

We seek man-found hope.  God works from an eternal scope.

Deeper Than Deliverance

The disciples toil all evening to capture a successful catch.  Jesus could have intervened at any time but he lets them struggle until morning.  Jesus desires his disciples to catch truth more than catching fish.  The learning:  We cannot accomplish the impossible.  Only Jesus can make the impossible possible. Entrust the outcome to Him.

Life with Jesus means our outcome won’t be as we expect.  The disciples go to fish.  On their own ability and capability, they are unable to produce results.  With Jesus, they exceed more than they could imagine.  With Jesus.  Better together.

Had Jesus delivered them part way through the night, the lesson’s impact would’ve been mitigated.  Jesus does not immediately rescue us from our dilemma.  Whatever our fish problem is, Jesus is looking at a bigger fish issue.  The reason Jesus helps us is not merely to meet our need.  It’s deeper than deliverance.

Jesus allows us to struggle.

Jesus builds our character in our struggle.

The effects of character building lasts longer than a stunning marvel or sensational miracle of fish mania.  Don’t spend your life looking into the water’s edge of your life for answers.  Devote your life seeking Jesus.  Commit your life to seeking the Real Truth.
