Crossroads are opportunities to turn closer to God or away from God.
In the landscape of 1 Samuel 8, we find a highly esteemed and godly prophet Samuel, who at an advanced age, is retiring. His successors, Samuel’s sons, are unlike their father and are corrupt.
At this point, the Israelite leadership has some crucial choices. Their decision?
Instead of initiating a prayer and fasting period for a new successor. Instead of asking God whom He wants to replace Samuel’s sons.
The Israelites adamantly decide to place their faith on a secular king. To lead in governing. To judge in disputes. To command their battles.
Crossroads. Where you can choose wisely or foolishly.
Despite Samuel’s admonishments. The Israelites decision to shift to a secular leadership would usher in a future of ungodly kings who will ultimately lead them to disaster. The complete annihilation of the Northern Kingdom. The ultimate fall of Jerusalem in 586 B.C.
Crossroads. The Israelites would choose poorly to the detriment of future generations.
But God had a plan for redemption. A baby wrapped in cloth. Born in a manger. In a town called Bethlehem.
This baby Jesus would redeem all past mistakes, transgressions, and foolish decisions to turn away from God.
This Christmas Eve. Let us celebrate our redemption. Better than any present. The gift of redemption is available to all who receive and believe in this baby Jesus.
Celebrate this Real Truth.
